Now that Bangladesh is more than thirty years old, time has come to have an objective assessment of the situation prevailing during the initial years of independence. Events of those years have influenced the process of democratic governance, which in turn has dwarfed the growth of the media. Media contributes greatly to the establishment of democratic culture but as its growth was retarded after independence, it failed to play its role. Against this backdrop, this book is presented with the premise that the reasons lie in the events of initial years. Many would like to challenge the assertion but a careful reading of the book will justify this. The contents of the book will also help in understanding the psyche of the media. That media can be a party to the power politics is visible in Bangladesh.
