Recent excavations have exposed a large amount of new archaeological, historical, and art-historical evidence for the study of ancient synagogues. This has given new evidence for reassessing the origins and development of early Palestinian synagogues, a new impetus to the study of ancient Jewish art, and the debate about the dating of Galilean synagogues. Leading experts on the synagogues in Roman and Byzantine Palestine discuss the current issues and emerging trends in their field.
